RUBY’S HERD

  • Ruby

    RUBY - Herd Leader

Ruby is the herd leader of the younger horses, and she is a calm, fair leader, who will gallop to her shelter at the sniff of rain.

She now knows who she is, what she likes and what she doesn’t.  Sadly, this was not the case when we first rescued her.

She is a confident lady who enjoys the company of our volunteers and enjoys nothing more than being able to explore her field with her friends.

  • Michael

    MICHAEL

Michael was rescued by us when we learnt that his mum, Faith, who we had previously rescued, had a son that had ween taken away from her.

We miraculously tracked down where Michael had been sold to. Our founder, Susie, rallied around to raise the £350 needed to buy him back and reunite him with his mum Faith.

He was only 3 months old when we collected him. When Michael and Faith were reunited, Michael squealed so loudly, we all started to cry!

Michael is a lovely boy who has grown massively in confidence, and everyone at the Sanctuary love and respect him.

  • Louie

    LOUIE

Louie was an emergency rescue. A baby horse of just 12 months old who had sadly not been fed for months during one of the coldest winters.

When we walked him off the lorry, he was a walking skeleton! He was placed in a small private paddock, then immediately collapsed. The vet was called and gave him 24 hours to live due to his neglect.

Susie lay with him on the grass under a duvet all night, holding him and telling him he was safe and loved.

The following morning 11 friends arrived to help Louie. They all helped to stand Louie up. We tempted him with a small amount of horse food but instead he wanted Susie’s rich tea biscuits!

Over the following days Louie would collapse and would gently be helped up using a harness.

Louie has grown into a magnificent young man and is a confident, cheeky and happy pony He is friends with everyone in his herd, but he and Michael have a particularly strong, everlasting bond.

  • Max

    MAX

Max joined us many years ago when his human mum was sadly diagnosed with terminal cancer. It was her dying wish that Max and his brother Ringo came to us, a safe sanctuary where there could live out their days together.

Despite his large size, Max is an extremely gentle and sensitive soul and fits the description of a “gentle giant” perfectly.

Max loves to be groomed and have cuddles from our volunteers and at times falls asleep because he is so relaxed.

  • Charlie

    CHARLIE

Charlie is a gentle boy who came to live with us in 2021 at the age of 15 as his human mum was having serious health issues.

It took a few months for Charlie to settle into the herd as he had never lived in a herd before. He had also never lived with female horses before, so he was intrigued by them and was eager to make friends with the girls! The other male horses in the herd weren’t exactly happy with Charlies excited behaviour with the girls initially so they chased him into the other field until he could calm down. He eventually understood the boundaries and now everyone gets on brilliantly.

Charlie is a gentle, peaceful, loving boy and we have discovered that he is a natural therapy horse. He absolutely loves doing Healing with Horses Sessions with people
