Our beautiful Bluebell, Marjorie, wondered into our sanctuary on 21st May 2020.
Back then our sanctuary was based in Wythall, Birmingham. We asked around neighbouring areas to see if anyone had lost a chicken, but no-one stepped forward to claim her as theirs. We then concluded that she may have been dumped as she no longer laid eggs.
We had no idea about chickens and had no facilities to home a chicken at our sanctuary, but we decided to care for her and provide a safe peaceful home. We cleared out one of our old stables, placed some bedding down, went and got her some food, a feeder and a drinker.
We soon realised that she needed some friends. We asked around but no where was rehoming chickens at the time, so we bought 2 chicks that were 10 weeks old from a country store. These were later named Dotty and Barbs (Barbara).
Marjorie didn’t like her new friends straight away and she was 3 times their size. So, we converted the stable into 2 sections for them to live side by side and gradually get to know each other.
They eventually became best friends and would wonder around the sanctuary telling each other where the best grubs were, sunbathe together and on occasions visit our pony’s field.
Sadly, she lost both of her first friends, Dotty and Barbs, but she has new ones now.
Marjorie is a very wise, independent lady who is very comical and stubborn at times. Her favourite treats are mealworms, and she often tries to chase her friends off so she can have them all to herself. She is definitely the boss.
We are so grateful for the day she wondered into the sanctuary, into our lives and into our hearts!
